Julian P. Hume Ph.D. (University of Portsmouth & Natural History Museum, London & Tring) I am educated as a palaeontologist (work on fossils) specialising in recent oceanic island faunas and, as part of the international dodo research programme 2006-2009, will be coordinating the avian (bird) palaeontological research. I am also a professional artist reconstructing extinct species as they might have appeared in life. My main interest in the project is to establish the diversity of animals that once occurred on pre-human Mauritius by fossil identification. I am also interested in how species became deposited in the locality, what was the composition of the lowland dry forest environment, and why was this locality unique in terms of fossil preservation. I am also keen to find specimens of juvenile dodo and dodo egg, because no juvenile material has survived and no egg has ever been found. It is discoveries like these that will tell us so much more about the dodos life history, as we know virtually nothing about its life-history at present. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Palaeo Research Group, School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of Portsmouth and the Bird Group, Department of Zoology, Natural History Museum, Tring.
